School Counseling
Located in our fifth- through eighth-grade centers, school counselors are caring, trusted educators who support every student’s academic, social, and emotional growth while providing guidance, advocacy, and a safe place to turn to when students need help. As members of their school leadership teams, they connect students and families with school and community resources to help every student feel supported, empowered, and ready to succeed.
What does a School Counselor do?
- School Counselors are certified educators in the state of Illinois and hold a master’s degree in School Counseling. They help all students to achieve their best academically, socially, and emotionally. This is done through teaching developmentally appropriate life lessons in classrooms and counseling (individually or in small groups). School counselors also advocate for students.
- School Counselors are people whom students can come to if they have a problem. Has your student experienced a loss in the family, or is he/she having a hard time due to changes at home? Call your School Counselor for assistance.
- As members of your school leadership team, they help make informed decisions to maximize each student’s success.
- Sometimes, referrals to outside agencies are the best way to help students and can be made through School Counselors who are experienced in their community.
